“The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland. Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins.” (p. 18)

Review:
Ever since the uprising of the districts against the capitol, there has been the Hunger Games. In each of the twelve remaining districts, two ‘tributes’—one boy and one girl—are chosen to compete in an outdoor fight for survival with the last living tribute being declared the winner. For sixteen-year-old Katniss who lives in District 12 with her mother and younger sister, Prim, the Hunger Games have become a grim fact of life and everyone in their district knows that to be chosen is death sentence. Despite this when her sister’s name is chosen Katniss steps up to take her place to compete in a game that could very well lead to her death.
Readers will become engrossed in the world of The Hunger Games and be caught up in Katniss’s fight for survival. This book is full of suspense and the characters are interesting and well-written. The author affectively creates a realistic futuristic world and readers will be glad to know that there are two sequels.
